Run for the Red gets the Green Light
5/14/13
All permits and approvals are in hand! The 2013 Run for the Red has the green light and we are going to do everything we can to make this a great race for you! The current forecast for Sunday is 71, which will make for a beautiful morning and hopefully great running weather. See you soon!

Update: Important Run for the Red Information
4/23/13
Run for the Red participants:
First, we are happy to report that the 2013 race is officially a Boston Qualifier! For all those looking to qualify, we wish you the best of luck!

Second, in previous years, we have had the opportunity to close the entire course to traffic. Unfortunately, this year while some portions of the course will be closed, there will be sections where runners will have to share the road with cars. The course is certified along the left shoulder, running against traffic. A strong police presence will be on the course, and we will do everything we can to make the public aware that there are runners on the road. There will be signs every mile, we will ask the media to alert everyone as much as possible, and there will still be a pace car up front and a sag wagon in the back. Major intersections will be staffed with volunteers directing traffic. We understand that this is concerning to some, and runner safety is of utmost importance to us, but it is not possible for us to close the entire course to vehicular traffic.

Third, for those who have asked, and so that you may properly train, at all water stops (approx. every 2 miles along the course) we will also serve Powerade. No word on if we will have gels yet, but if you want to inquire with us as the time gets closer, we should have an answer by the time we are a week out. We do our best to constantly update the website as details become available, especially in regards to water stops, locations of port-a-potties, etc.

And lastly, for our relay runners - Now that we know exactly where the 13.1 mark will be, we are doing our best to quickly work out the details so that you have a smooth transition on race day. Rest assured, we will make sure that relay runners have transportation to and from the halfway point.

Should we have any new information to share, we will communicate it via e-mail and Facebook as quickly as possible. Please feel free to e-mail us if you have any questions at all (info@poconomarathon.org). We do our best to get back to you within 24 hours, so please be patient.

Thank you,
Bob Werts, Race Director

Important Run for the Red Announcement
4/12/13
Dear Run for the Red participants:
We were informed approximately two weeks ago that a bridge along the marathon race course is scheduled for replacement by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. On the date of the race, May 19, the course will be impassible at that location. We have spent the past two weeks exhaustively investigating all possible solutions to this problem, including a temporary foot bridge, a short diversion around the bridge, and finally, requesting that the project be delayed until after the race. Unfortunately, none of these options, or the various other options proposed to solve the problem with minimal impact, are viable solutions.

The Pocono Mountains Run for the Red Marathon puts great effort into creating the best possible experience for our runners, while achieving its goal of raising money for the American Red Cross of the Poconos. After exploring the aforementioned options, we have deemed it necessary to attempt to change the race course. Requests for permits have been filed with municipalities and local officials, and the new course is scheduled to be certified by the UST&F as a Boston qualifier on April 22. We are optimistic that the new course will be given a green light. Once all approvals are acquired, we will inform participants via e-mail, Facebook, and through our website. The only other alternative is canceling the race for this year, which is NOT something that the race committee wants to see happen. Just as you require months of training, this race requires months of planning from us, and we certainly do not want to disappoint you or not be able to raise funds for the American Red Cross.

We understand that this may cause an inconvenience to some of you, and for that we are extremely sorry. In an attempt to offer our marathon and marathon relay runners options, if you are registered as of April 11, you may defer your registration to 2014 (instructions below). Assuming bridge construction is complete and barring any unforeseen circumstances, the 2014 race course will revert to what was planned for this year. As per our standard policy, we will not be issuing any refunds.

The 2013 marathon and marathon relay course will begin at the Pocono International Speedway and will still finish at Stroudsburg High School, as it has in previous years. The course also still has a significant change in elevation, dropping over 1,400 feet from beginning to end. Please note, this course change does not affect any race rules or policies; there is still no race day packet pickup or registration.

For a map of the 2013 course and turn by turn directions, view the Marathon page under The Races heading on this webpage.

Sunday, May 12th, was the final day deferral requests for the 2013 race will be accepted.

On behalf of myself and the volunteer staff, we sincerely apologize for this inconvenience. We work tirelessly to create the best possible experience for everyone involved from start to finish and we look forward to seeing you in May.

Sincerely,
Bob Werts
Race Director, Pocono Mountains Run for the Red Marathon
